An extraordinary Japanese American woman who spoke out and fought shoulder-to-shoulder with African Americans, Native Americans, Latinos, Asian Americans, and Whites for social justice, civil rights, and prisoners and women’s rights in the U.S. and internationally for over half a century. A prolific writer and speaker on human rights, Kochiyama has spoken at over 100 colleges and universities and high schools in the U.S. and Canada.

I’m sorry that I have failed you. I’m sorry that I became the fucked up monster that you view me as. Being diagnosed with a terribly beautiful disorder changes the way you look at yourself in the mirror when you are getting dressed for the day. It declines slowly, but you’ll never grasp your mind around it since you will never genuinely know what it feels like to think negatively and positively simultaneously. It’s exhausting. But you’ll never hold my hand and love me the way that you should. You called the police and had me arrested… The test results came back in the next week. Thanks for showing me your true colors. I owe nothing to you.
